Possible excursions you can do on your own: Clavijo Travel by taxi from Logroño to see the stunning castle at Clavijo where St James was first seen on a white horse at the Battle of Clavijo, fighting with the Christian soldiers against the Moors. This was where he earned the name "Santiago Matamoros' - the Moor Slayer.
Las Medulas Travel by taxi from Ponferrada to the World Heritage site of 'Las Medulas' - a spectacular landscape which was once the most important gold mining area in the Roman Empire. The village of Las Medulas is on the Camino Invierno route and you may hike one of the shorter Medulas trails to see the enormous caves excavated by the Romans.
Atapuerca This is the archaeological site where the oldest human remains in Europe have been found. It is possible to catch a shuttle from the Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos to this site. The tickets are quite affordable and the museum is fantastic! You can find more information about catching the shuttle to Atapuerca on the Museum website, which is here and has an English option (upper left hand corner): Click here for museum information. Finisterre Take a taxi or bus from Santiago to Finisterre at night to watch the sunset over the Atlantic at the End of the World. The cost for the bus is between 30-40 euros round trip.
Some pilgrims prefer to get together with others in their group and hire a taxi. Last year, the cost of a taxi for the day was around 150 euros. Split between 3-6 people, this is a very good value. In this case, you could have the taxi pick you up at a time convenient to you, drive you to Finisterre, wait while you visit or have lunch, drive you to Muxia, wait while you visit, then drive you back to Santiago. There is a taxi stand right outside our hotel in Santiago, and the receptionist is often quite willing to help you make these arrangements if we aren't around.
Booking Excursions. In the past, we have discovered that MOST pilgrims are too weary at the end of the day to consider excursions. Because of this, we no longer offer them as part of the package. We suggest you walk a few days and see how you feel. Then, if you want to book an excursion, we will be happy to give you the telephone number of the taxi drivers we have used in the past and help you plan your excursion whenever possible.
The trip to Finisterre can be booked once you reach Santiago. We will be happy to help you with these arrangements.
